From Plastic to Recycled Polyester
Plastic bottles and polyester yarn might seem like two very different things. But they can start with the same material: PET.
Plastic is useful because it is strong and durable. But those same qualities also mean that it does not simply disappear once it is thrown away. Plastic waste can remain in the environment for a very long time.
PET, or polyethylene terephthalate, is one of the plastics commonly used to make bottles. When PET bottles are collected and recycled, the material can be processed and turned into recycled polyester.
From there, it can become fibres, and then yarn.
And that yarn can become something quite different from the bottle it started with — including a knitted bag.
Why recycled polyester?
We use recycled polyester yarn for our knitted bags for a few reasons. It works well with the knitted construction we use, and it gives us the durability we look for in an everyday bag.
But there is another reason we like it: the material already exists.
Instead of always starting with new raw materials, recycled polyester gives existing PET another use.
That is one of the reasons we choose it for our bags.
